Natural Endogenous Bio Reactor (NEBR)

The Natural Endogenous Bio Reactor (NEBR) is a specialized bioreactor that uses endogenous respiration to stabilize sewage with minimal secondary sludge generation. NEBR-based sewage treatment plants can be deployed under SBM 2.0 and upgraded to meet stringent NGT norms primarily by enhancing treatment components like NEBR bio media, hydroxidiser, and floating wetland rafts, without major additional civil works. The system is designed for self-sustainability by converting biosolids into value-added products such as nutrient-rich humus and biochar produced using vetiver root biomass.

Principle of Operation

NEBR operates on natural biodegradation in an oxygen-limited environment, where microorganisms eventually consume their own cellular material, resulting in highly stabilized sludge and reduced excess biomass.

  • Mixed microbial communities carry out aerobic and facultative degradation of organic matter over extended retention times to reduce BOD and COD levels
  • Controlled Bacterial Culture
  • Fresh bacteria are bred externally and dosed periodically into the reactor, ensuring resilience under high load, toxicity, or variable flow conditions.

Process Flow

The NEBR-based STP integrates mechanical, biological, advanced oxidation, and nature-based polishing units to achieve high BOD removal with low footprint and operational cost.

  • 1. Influent Collection
  • Raw sewage passes through bar screens to remove large debris and a grit chamber to settle dense inorganics, with periodic dosing of a microbial consortium before entering the Anaerobic tank.
  • 3. Bio Filtration Area
  • Fixed-film NEBR bio media provides high surface area for biofilm growth, reducing BOD, COD, and suspended solids in the effluent.


  • 4. Hydroxidiser
  • An advanced oxidation unit injects radicals derived from oxygen, and hydroxyl species using microbubble “Micro Trax” diffusers to oxidize recalcitrant contaminant.
  • 6. Outfall & Reuse
  • Treated effluent is discharged to a nala, creek, agricultural land, or directed for groundwater recharge, subject to site conditions and regulatory approvals.
